Mike Pence launches 2024 presidential campaign in face of Trump primary challenge

by Tim Reid

(Reuters) – Mike Pence officially launched his candidacy for the 2024 Republican primary on Wednesday, an election in which he will find former US President Donald Trump, of whom he was vice-president, on his way.

“I believe in the American people and I am convinced that God is not done with America yet. Together we can fix this country and the best days of the best nation on Earth are yet to come!” Mike Pence on Twitter in a message accompanied by an election campaign video.

It is very rare for a vice president to run for a primary against a former president he served. In addition to Donald Trump, Mike Pence will face a long list of suitors in the Republican camp, among which the governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis.

Mike Pence, who turns 64 on Wednesday, broke up with Donald Trump after the Capitol stormed in 2021, while he was inside the building. Like other Republican presidential contenders, he nevertheless came to the defense of the former president after he was indicted by a New York court in the case of the payment made by his former lawyer to porn actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election campaign.

Mike Pence, a staunch conservative and follower of the evangelical Christian community, will hold a first rally for his election campaign in the evening in Des Moines, the capital of the state of Iowa where he intends to concentrate his forces.
