Quebecer Mike Lee Returns to Broadway in “Notre Dame de Paris”
New York City – After a successful run last year, Quebecer Mike Lee is set to return to Broadway for another round of performances in the iconic musical “Notre Dame de Paris.” Lee will be reprising his role as Clopin, the King of the Court of Miracles, at the Lincoln Theater in New York over the next three weeks.
Reflecting on his previous Broadway experience, Lee admits that it all happened so fast that he didn’t have time to fully grasp the stress and magnitude of performing on such a renowned stage. “Last year, I was physically present on stage, but not necessarily mentally,” he confesses. However, this time around, Lee intends to fully embrace and take advantage of the opportunity.
The 2022 experience was not without its challenges for Lee, who first gained fame on the reality TV show “Star Academy” a decade ago. Not only was he performing for a new audience on American soil, but he was also stepping into the shoes of Clopin for the first time after months of intense rehearsal. As an understudy, Lee alternates the role with the Frenchman Jay.
“I remember feeling lost a few times last year! I was still in the process of learning and understanding the character. I went on stage, but it didn’t fully register that I was in New York,” Lee recalls.
However, over the past 12 months, Lee has gained valuable experience and confidence in his portrayal of Clopin. He has defended the role across Quebec and Turkey, gradually overcoming the impostor syndrome that initially plagued him.
“At first, I relied heavily on the work of Luck Mervil, the original interpreter of Clopin in 1998. I didn’t recognize myself at all in his portrayal. It felt so far from who I am that I questioned why they chose me,” Lee admits. But something clicked, and he was able to tap into the necessary rage and anger that the character demands.
Lee’s personal journey has played a significant role in shaping his interpretation of Clopin. “I have experienced racism, injustice, and pain. Revisiting these events helped me build the character, and fortunately, it confirmed that I am at peace with my past. Those files are well and truly classified,” he concludes.
Fans of “Notre Dame de Paris” and theater enthusiasts can look forward to witnessing Mike Lee’s captivating performance as Clopin once again. With his newfound confidence and experience, Lee is ready to leave a lasting impression on Broadway audiences.
