The US Republican Party announced that its representatives held a second voting session on Tuesday, as a result of which they decided to nominate Representative Mike Johnson for the presidency of the House of Representatives, making him the fourth candidate they have chosen to assume this position within two weeks.

Republican Representative Elise Stefanik, who chaired the voting session, said that Representative from Louisiana, Mike Johnson, won the internal ballot that took place hours after his predecessor, Tom Emmer, announced that he was withdrawing his candidacy for this position due to the fierce opposition he faced from representatives supporting former President Donald Trump.

American media reported on Tuesday that Republican Representative Emmer, who was nominated by his party colleagues to assume the position of president ParliamentHe withdrew his candidacy.

The representative from Minnesota withdrew after his nomination faced opposition from a number of his far-right colleagues loyal to former President Donald Trump, so he preferred to abandon his candidacy even before voting on it in a public session.

Emmer’s decision to withdraw came only hours after a secret voting session held by Republican members of the House of Representatives, during which they chose, by a very narrow majority, their 62-year-old colleague as a candidate to succeed Kevin McCarthy, who was dismissed by the House on October 3 of this year after his colleagues loyal to Trump turned against him.

Since the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives became vacant, Congress finds itself unable to address files related to very important crises, most notably the war in Ukraine and Israel, as well as the imminent threat of closing government institutions in the United States due to the public debt ceiling.

Emmer won after a series of secret votes in a battle initially fought by nine candidates.

Emmer was nominated for the presidency of the House of Representatives despite his lack of the necessary experience, as he had never chaired any committee, nor had he played any leadership role for several months, even though he is considered the third most prominent Republican figure in the House.

The House of Representatives includes 221 Republican representatives, only 117 of whom voted for Emmer, according to American media, compared to 97 who voted for his competitor, Johnson.
