The American poses in a picture where she has her left leg wrapped and on top of it an ice pack.
“I’m pretty beat up at the moment. I will not be competing again this weekend or in Kronplatz (on Tuesday). Then it’s hard to say right now,” she writes.
Judging by the TV images, the American made a wrong cut in a curve and drove straight into the safety net. The 28-year-old lay there for a couple of minutes before she got up with the help of medical personnel. Shiffrin, who leads the World Cup, was able to walk off the piste by herself but was unable to support herself on her left foot. She was taken away by helicopter for further examination.
The US Skiing and Snowboarding Association writes on X that Shiffrin was taken to hospital in Cortina and that an initial examination shows that the ligaments in the left knee appear to be healing.
The accident also happened to Corinne Suter. The Swiss also got a wrong cut and crashed. She lay down for a couple of minutes but was then able to get up with pain in her knee.
A further ten riders raced out, among them the only Swede in the competition – Lisa Hörnblad. The Norwegian Kajsa Vickhoff Lie told the television company ORF that the downhill slope in Cortina is more dangerous this year than before due to uneven ground.
Austrian Stephanie Venier won the competition ahead of Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami and Canadian Valerie Grenier.

There have been several high-profile crashes in downhill races this season. The Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who is the boyfriend of Mikaela Shiffrin, was seriously injured in Wengen last weekend and has since undergone two operations.
Kilde told us from the hospital bed that he had received, among other things, a deep cut and nerve damage and the season is over for the alpine speed star.
– I have damaged some nerves, but luckily the nerves that control the motor skills are not damaged. But it’s nerve damage that will take time (to heal). That is the serious part, said Aamodt Kilde in an interview with Viaplay.
