Mihail Mikov supported Wallonia for SETA’s brave NO – 2024-09-18 12:03:02

/ world today news/ Mikhail Mikov expressed support for Wallonia’s decision to reject the SETA trade agreement between the European Union and Canada in correspondence to the leadership of the Belgian province.

“I would like to express my personal respect for the highly responsible, strong and courageous position of the Walloon government against CETA. It is my deep conviction and understanding that this is the right way for the Socialists to protect the interests of the people against global corporations,” Mikov said in a letter to Wallonia Prime Minister Paul Maniet and the chairman of the Socialist group in the regional parliament, Christophe Collignon.

The People’s Representative from BSP LEFT BULGARIA also writes that bold actions, regardless of the strong political and economic pressure in these days of strong turbulence, are the only possible way out for Europe to remain united, strong and influential.

Wallonia’s position against CETA was also supported by 88 members of the European Parliament, who recalled that the agreement was negotiated behind closed doors, without consulting elected representatives, and raises many questions about democracy. “In addition to the serious concern you express about this free trade agreement, you also make clear the need for transparency at the heart of the decision-making process. In the course of our parliamentary activity, we have repeatedly expressed similar objections. Indeed, the essence of CETA extends beyond a simple technical agreement to liberalize goods and services: it is about our social and environmental standards, the ability of our public authorities to regulate and the independence of our justice,” they address the Belgian provincial government . Among the MEPs who signed the letter is Georgi Pirinski from the Group of Socialists and Democrats.

On October 14 of this year Mihail Mikov once again announced his position on the upcoming signing of SETA. In it, he recalls that under his leadership as chairman of the BSP in 2015, Bulgarian socialists collected 25,000 signatures against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership – SETA’s big brother, and in the fall of 2014, the National Council of the BSP adopted a special TTIP position.

Mikov commented on social networks:

“Against all the visible and invisible results for our country, the rulers, who will be responsible for the Bulgarian agreement, never prepared a serious official position on the terms of partnership negotiated on our behalf… There is no analysis of their impact on the Bulgarian economy, for not to mention the social system. As a country we seem to have no pretensions.

There was talk of a promise by Canada to cancel visas so that Bulgaria would not impose a veto on SETA. However, I do not see the commonality between the two topics, because the free movement of people is not as advocated in the agreement as the free movement of capital.

I would like to emphasize that the eventual cancellation of Canadian visas does not mean that the Bulgarian government has protected the national interest in the SETA negotiations.

In addition, it became clear that anyway the treaty will be in the procedure of “provisional” application already after its signing, despite the magnanimous decision of Brussels to seek ratification in the national parliaments anyway. What is coming out now – even for relinquishing sovereignty, you don’t need to decide for yourself if some “chief” has already made a decision for you…”
