Seehofer calls the refugee situation precarious
Minister of the Interior Horst Seehofer (CSU) warned of the situation on the Turkish-Greek border of a worse situation than in the 2015 refugee crisis. The situation is precarious, said Seehofer, according to participants in the meeting of the Union faction in the Bundestag. “If we make mistakes now, it is far from being correctable,” the Interior Minister was quoted as saying. “We have to get this topic under control, otherwise we will have 2015 plus,” said Seehofer accordingly. The Federal Minister of the Interior called for security of the EU’s external border and said: “We have to make it clear that our borders are not open.”
He agreed with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) that the refugee pact between the EU and Turkey must be stabilized, said Seehofer after this information. He criticized the EU Commission, which was working too slowly. Greece is doing an important job – Germany will support the country wherever possible.
At the same time, Seehofer thanked Merkel that she had worked side by side with him on refugee policy. He also warned against talking about taking over contingents of refugees. The result is otherwise “a new wave of refugees”. Order must be restored here.
