In a completely different way and with a long horizon of reflection on the side effects in Greece, the issue of immigration is now raised, due to the war crisis in the Middle East.
The increase in flows during the recent period, this time mainly originating in Egypt and Libya, form a geopolitical parameter, which is particularly problematic for the Greek government.
This is the obvious reason for concern for Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who, as a direct stakeholder, is going to Egypt on Sunday, joining the delegation led by the President of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen, the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni and the Prime Minister of Belgium, Alexander De Kro, who holds the European presidency. It is noted that Mrs. Meloni is equally interested in the increase in immigration flows. Officially, it is stated that the purpose of the visit is the agreement to provide financial assistance of 7.5 billion euros to the Weather government, precisely for the purposes of managing and dealing with the crisis.
In this way, the problem for Europe is emphatically raised with new data, especially in view of the European elections and with the rise of the extreme right dominating the political background.
The Greek government is looking for balance
At the same time, the developments in Egypt and the pending uncertainty regarding the fate of the Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, as long as the war with Israel continues, form a field of intense uncertainty regarding the developments and the possibilities of preventing a generalized crisis, with movements at the forefront populations to Europe.
The Greek government is looking for balances and possibilities for drawing common European policy lines, but it remains one of the most exposed zones to the escalation of the problem.
In addition to these, the Prime Minister is expected to have a personal meeting with President Sisi, as there are many important bilateral issues pending.
Among them the electrical interconnection between Egypt and Greece, the upgrading of Egypt-Turkey relations, but also the parameters of Greek interest regarding the role of Egypt in safeguarding stability or, more correctly, in avoiding a more general destabilization in the Southeast Mediterranean region.
