The migrant community does not forget those killed by covid-19 and will demonstrate it this Saturday, September 12 with a virtual tribute along with 10 of the 22 Guatemalan consulates in the United States, USA.

The initiative is promoted by members of the Mission Guatemala USA with a minute of silence, a wreath and a plaque to be posted at the consulate headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles California; Miami Florida; Lake Worth, Florida; New York, New York. Also in Phoenix, Arizona; Providence, Rhode Island; San Francisco, California and Silver Spring, Maryland.

A tribute in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic

Because the Mission does not have representatives in all the states where there are Guatemalan diplomatic missions, nor those of Dallas, Texas will participate; Del Rio, Texas; Denver, Colorado; Mcallen, Texas; Oklahoma City; Oklahoma Ohio, Columbus; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Raleigh, North Carolina; San Bernardino, California; Seattle, Washington and Tucson, Arizona.

“It is a small gesture for Guatemalans who lost family members far from their land”, stated Aroldo Ramírez, deputy general director of the Guatemala USA Mission. He added that the inspiration came from what Mexico has done with its compatriots. “They took his ashes to his country with posthumous honors and great sensitivity,” added Ramírez.

For this reason, the act that they will carry out with the support of Vice Foreign Minister Eduardo Hernández, hopes that it will be significant for Guatemalans in the United States and Guatemala.

Through the social networks of each of the consulates they will be able to follow the transmission of the act and hours will vary by state. In San Francisco, it is expected to start at 8:00 a.m. (9:00 a.m. in Guatemala) and in Los Angeles, at 11:00 a.m. (10:00 a.m. in Guatemala).

“Hopefully the human losses due to the covid-19 pandemic serve as motivation to attack the origin of migration and not its effects.”

Aroldo Ramírez, deputy director of Mission Guatemala USA.
