Migrants stranded on islets in the Aegean Sea

Four people have been found dead after the accident, and the Greek coast guard searched Thursday night with several vessels and a helicopter for possible missing people.

Due to dark and difficult weather conditions, the stranded migrants will be evacuated from the islet on Friday at the earliest, according to state Greek TV. It is not known what condition they are in, or how big the islet is.

Antikythera is located about 235 kilometers south of Athens.

On Wednesday, an inflatable boat with migrants sank off the Greek island of Folegandros in the Aegean Sea. Three people have been found dead after the accident, while 13 were rescued. An unknown number are still missing and are feared dead.

According to some of the survivors, there were around 50 people in the boat, while others say that there were 32 on board.

The shipwreck off Folegandros may thus have claimed between 20 and 40 lives and is, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the worst accident in the Aegean this year.

– This shipwreck is a painful reminder that people are still embarking on dangerous journeys in their search for safety, says UNHCR’s representative in Greece, Adriano Silvestri.

The UNHCR estimates that more than 2,500 people died or disappeared in an attempt to reach Europe by sea in the first eleven months of the year.
