Medical evacuation for 23 migrants on board the Ocean Viking ship in the port of Catania, with the NGO ship continuing its journey to the port of Ancona, where the other approximately 340 migrants rescued in recent days will be disembarked.
The Ocean Viking had on board over 350 shipwrecked people saved during four rescue operations carried out by the humanitarian ship of the NGO SOS Mediterranee. Also on the ship were the 25 surviving migrants rescued by the crew after the sinking of their dinghy from Libya. According to the dramatic stories of the castaways, around 60 of their traveling companions died.
Yesterday, due to the seriousness of their health conditions, two migrants were transported by air ambulance from the Ocean Viking, one died in Agrigento hospital, the other is hospitalized in Palermo.
Ocean Viking had been assigned the port of Ancona. Precisely due to the seriousness of the conditions of the migrants, many of them with burns and suffering from days adrift at sea, the crew and also opposition politicians had asked the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi to disembark the migrants in a nearby port .
