In the midst of the growing immigration crisis in New York, a defiant flow of buses loaded with migrants has arrived in cities in New Jersey, flouting recent restrictions imposed by New York Mayor Eric Adams with the aim of containing the situation.
The city of Jersey City, located near the Big Apple, reported through the social network X this Sunday that Approximately a dozen buses from Texas and one from Louisiana arrived in the state over the New Year’s weekend.
These vehicles transported almost 400 migrants, who apparently chose to continue their journey to New York using the train service.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy addressed the situation the night before through a spokesperson to Politico, indicating that the arrival of “a handful of buses with migrant families at various train stations.”
Murphy expressed concern that his state is being used as a “transit point” to evade Adams’ executive order.
Likewise, Secaucus (New Jerey) Mayor Michael Gonnelli reported Sunday that Hudson County officials had informed city police about the arrival of buses at the train station in Secaucus Junction starting Saturday. He explained that it is believed that four buses arrived and dropped off immigrants who then took trains to New York City.
They flout Adams’ laws
The order issued by Mayor Adams last Wednesday seeks to regulate the arrival of charter buses with immigrants from other states. It requires that they notify their arrival in the city 32 hours in advance, establishing that failure to comply with this regulation will be considered a misdemeanor.
Consequences can range from fines to lawsuits, and even confiscation of vehicles used to transport migrants.
Last week, Adams joined the mayors of Chicago and Denver to renew calls for more federal aid and coordination with Texas over the growing number of asylum seekers arriving in their cities.
“We cannot allow buses with people who need our help to arrive without prior notice at any time of the day or night“Adams said at the virtual press conference Wednesday with the other mayors. “Not only does this prevent us from providing assistance in an orderly manner, but it endangers those who have already suffered so much.”
In response to the situation, the governor’s spokesperson stated that local and federal authorities are coordinating efforts to address this immigration challenge. confirmed that “all or almost all” of the migrants who arrived on the buses have continued their journeys toward their final destination in New York City.
The most recent data from the New York City Hall reveals that, as of April 2022, More than 161,000 migrants have arrived in the city, with around 68,000 currently under the care of local authorities. These figures have created a significant budget hole, estimated at $12 billion by mid-2025, according to Adams’ statements.
