He writes, among other things The Guardian.
The between 110 and 130 migrants from Central and South America, including families with children, were spread across three buses.
Late in the evening of December 24, they were left in the cold outside the residence of the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, in Washington DC
According to the newspaper, the buses were sent from Texas, as part of an ongoing political conflict over the country’s immigration policy. This is also confirmed by the emergency aid organization SAMU First Response, writes the Reuters news agency.
The organization’s executive director, Tatiana Laborde, says they were placed on the buses by Texas local governments.
– The fact that Abbott (Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, journ. note) keeps sending people here, late at night on Christmas Eve when it’s so cold, really reveals the evil behind it, says Amy Fischer, a voluntary associated organization for migrants, according to The Guardian.
Sharp increase
The political debate about US immigration policy has recently escalated.
Last week, the Supreme Court decided to delay the expiration date of a rule implemented under the Trump administration.
The so-called Title 42 allowed border guards to remove migrants on the spot without them being allowed to apply for asylum. Now the rule’s future is up in the air, after a federal appellate judge ruled in favor of a migrant group that was not sufficiently enshrined in law.
Local politicians have warned that lifting this rule would lead to a sharp increase in the number of people arriving at the border.
According to The Guardian, this is exactly what happened just days before the law went into effect, and the border city of El Paso in the state of Texas was forced to declare a state of emergency.
Ask Biden for action
Harris’ political opponents believe the current administration is failing to ensure security along the border.
“You and your administration need to stop lying about border security and instead immediately deploy federal resources to address the terrible problems you have created,” the Texas governor wrote in a letter to President Joe Biden last week. newspaper.
At the same time, Abbott called on Biden to “secure the southern border before more innocent lives are lost.”
According to the Reuters news agency, the governor has not yet confirmed that his state was behind the transport of migrants to Harris’ home.
However, a statement from the Biden administration on Sunday determined that Abbott “left the children in the ditches on Christmas Eve, while it was below freezing outside, without coordinating with federal or local authorities.”
“(…) this political game does nothing but put human lives at risk”, said spokesman Abdullah Hasan in the statement.
It is not the first time that the president’s political opponents have organized this type of transport.
Abbott has already bused 14,000 migrants to major cities in other states. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey have both transported migrants to Democrat-controlled cities.
The disc
In response to the criticisms, the Ministry of Internal Security came out on the same day, i.e. Christmas Eve, and assured that they will continue to “enforce our immigration and health laws”.
The ministry has warned that anyone who tries to cross the border without approval will be expelled from the country.
It is perhaps not so surprising that immigration is a political hot potato in the United States these days.
On Friday, the country’s border and customs authorities said a total of 233,740 migrants arrived at the border in November, the highest number on record for the month.
El Paso Border Control released a Facebook post on Dec. 12, where it wrote that nearly 2,500 illegal border crossings were recorded each day last weekend.
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article stated that the Supreme Court temporarily repealed the Title 42 Rule. The correct thing is that they pushed back the expiration date.
