Migrant Train Suspensions: Ferromex Halts 60 Freight Trains in Mexico

Mexican railway company Ferromex has suspended the journeys of 60 freight trains in the country. Thousands of migrants used these trains to travel to the United States border.

A total of almost 4,300 people were on board trains or on Ferromex sites in various cities. This has resulted in fatal accidents in recent days, the company says. For safety reasons, Ferromex will temporarily not carry out dozens of journeys. The 60 trains involved have a capacity comparable to 1,800 trucks.

Thousands of migrants have used Mexican freight trains to move north in recent years. Several people were killed and injured.

The reduced rail capacity could have an impact on production or supply chains, the company warned. Ferromex wants the government to come up with a solution.
