Migrant shot and killed on the border between Turkey and Greece

It is not clear who fired the fatal shot on Saturday night.

Greek police patrolled along the river Evros, which at one point is 60-70 meters wide and a popular place to try to wade across the border, writes the news agency AP, which has also received information from an unnamed police officer.

Police saw several people on the Turkish side of the river at 9 p.m. They say eleven people boarded an inflatable boat, and the police shouted at them and shouted that they had to return.

In response, there was a heavy volley of gunfire from the Turkish side. The Greek police threw themselves on the ground and fired warning shots into the air, according to an official statement, which is confirmed by the anonymous police source.

The boat reached the Greek riverbank, and five people jumped out. Four of them came ashore, while the fifth was left lifeless in the water. After some problems getting to the person in the water, the police got the woman ashore and found that she was dead.

Interrogations with the survivors – a woman from Eritrea and two men and a 17-year-old boy from Pakistan – gave different information about the woman’s nationality, but everyone agreed that she was from Africa. It is not known what happened to the six others who are said to have tried to cross the river, but the police do not think they got into Greece.

A preliminary forensic examination shows that the woman was shot in the back, from close range with a fine-caliber weapon. Police sources say Greek police do not use such weapons.
