Migrant Found Dead in Bourbourg Canal near Refugee Camp Sparks Investigation: Latest Update on Tragic Incident

A migrant was found dead on Saturday in the Bourbourg canal in Loon-Plage (North), near a refugee camp.

The man “was brought back to the bank by migrants who called emergency services,” said the Dunkirk public prosecutor’s office. The nationality and age of the deceased are currently unknown.

An investigation into the causes of death has been opened and entrusted to the Dunkirk police station, and an autopsy must take place in the coming days.

“Two men died yesterday on the Franco-British border,” said Juliette Delaplace, project manager at Secours catholique, on X (ex-Twitter), in reference to this death and that of a man on Saturday, hit by a train, near a camp in Calais. However, the Boulogne-sur-Mer public prosecutor’s office does not confirm at this stage that it is a migrant.

Juliette Delaplace also calls on the prefecture and the Ministry of the Interior: “It is high time to recognize the dangerousness of the policy you are leading and to change it! Unless you admit that these deaths, which were lives, are worth nothing in your eyes.”
