Migrant families worry about deportation threats in NYC – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK – About 50,000 immigrant families in New York City are at risk of eviction from temporary shelters set up by the Administration and face possible disruptions in the new school year that begins next week , support groups warned this Tuesday.

The New York Immigrant Coalition held a news conference Tuesday to advise those families, who are part of the nearly 211,000 immigrants, most of them Latin American, who arrived in the city in the last two years, and among them are approximately 36,000. children and young people of school age, as indicated.

Kesi Gordon, a representative of the Coalition, noted that this August authorities began giving eviction notices within 60 days to 30,000 families seeking asylum – as they are officially called – living in shelters run by the Department of Homeless Services.

Those 30,000 families join another 20,000 who live in shelters run by two other local agencies and were already subject to 60-day eviction notices, he said.

Families can ask to live in a shelter in the city again, but they are not sure that it is the same one they were in, which causes “disappointment” in the education of children and adolescents who were educated in nearby schools. places they have to leave, the group warned.

There are exceptions to these evictions, such as families in which there is a pregnant woman, babies less than half a year old or sick parents and children, and it is also unclear whether the city will actually evict families with children who have been informed. within two months, Well so far it has only been done by single adults.

The school year in the New York public school system, the largest in the United States, begins on Thursday, September 5 and, as the Coalition reminded, students, who have the right to an education up to the age of 21 years, they cannot be refused registration because of their situation.

Due to the large number of Hispanic children among immigrants, some schools have opened additional classes with teachers able to teach in Spanish, and the same schools are promoting the collection of materials (clothes and shoes) for the those families, as EFE has confirmed.

New York City, led by Democrat Eric Adams, has faced the immigration crisis by turning hotels into shelters and using temporary shelters because of its ‘sanctuary city’ rules that ask him not to leave anyone on the street, heavily criticized by the administration.

In his latest interventions, referring to the crisis and the eviction notices, Adams has argued that the shelter system is not there for people to live in shelters all their lives and pointed out e that the administration offers help to immigrants to go to other places.
