Migrant Crisis: Overcrowding at Roosevelt Hotel in New York City

New York, Monday, July 31, 2023 ((rezonodwes.com)) – Dozens of migrants were seen on video sleeping on the floor outside the Roosevelt Hotel in New York on Monday morning after the hotel , which served as a makeshift accommodation center for asylum seekers, reached capacity over the weekend.

According to the New York Post, the group of migrants waiting to be welcomed into the makeshift shelter was so large that people were sleeping shoulder to shoulder along an entire street.

New York City Council Majority Leader Keith Powers said over the weekend that his team was working with Mayor Eric Adams’ office and others to “address the reception situation at the Roosevelt Hotel.

“It is imperative that we immediately address these inhumane and concerning conditions and find a way to alter the reception,” Mr Powers said in a tweet.

The 1,000-room hotel became the city’s main “arrival center for asylum seekers” this year, after being closed for nearly three years due to the pandemic.

The self-proclaimed sanctuary city has been hit hard by the influx of migrants from the southern border. It has contracts with over 100 hotels to house asylum seekers in over 10,000 rooms across the city.

According to the New York Post, some 93,200 migrants have arrived in the city since the spring of 2022. More than 2,500 migrants still arrive in New York each week.
