Mexican authorities found 206 migrants in an abandoned truck in the southeastern state of Veracruz on Monday. Authorities believe the migrants were on their way to the United States.
These are people from Guatemala and Honduras, including twenty unaccompanied minors. The driver of the truck is believed to have fled.
The truck was found near the town of José Cardel, about 280 kilometers east of Mexico City. The truck’s trailer had been modified to hide its contents from X-ray scans. A metal structure was also added to the truck as a mezzanine. This allowed more migrants to be transported.
The victims were dehydrated and drugged, presumably because without food and drink they would have to relieve themselves less.
Many thousands of migrants fleeing poverty, violence and political oppression try to reach the US via Mexico. Between October 2021 and October 2022, the US Border Patrol recorded more than 2 million attempts to cross the US border. Most migrants come from Central America, but the share from Venezuela, Haiti and Cuba is growing.
