Migrant clearance operation from the Porto Vecchio Trieste

(ANSA) – TRIESTE, NOV 20 – The clearing operations of migrants from the old port began this morning and have been occupying various dilapidated structures of the ancient port and the area around the main exit for months now. Around 7am the first vehicles of the Civil Protection, the Financial Police, the State Police, the Carabinieri, the Army, the local police and the Fire Brigade arrived. For the moment the operations have been concentrated under the canopy of the exit of the Old Port where around a hundred migrants sleep in sleeping bags, under camping tents and on makeshift beds. The situation is calm, the police have had the migrants line up to check their documents and position. The people will then be subjected to a health check and then probably transferred elsewhere. This is a second major clearing operation after that of last June 21st when the so-called Silos, which is located a few meters away, was freed. Since then the migrants have been taken to specific facilities outside the region, but the flow of arrivals from the so-called ‘Balkan route’ has never stopped and many of those arriving in the city have found shelter in the exit area and in some dilapidated buildings once used as port warehouses. As web ⁤editor for world-today-news.com, ⁢I would be ⁤excited to interview two guests about the ongoing migrant clearance operations in Trieste, Italy. Here is a proposed interview transcript:

Guest‍ 1: Dr. Maria Toscano, ⁤Director of the International Migrant Solidarity Network

Guest 2: Captain Alessandro Faggiano, Head⁢ of the Carabinieri⁣ for Public ‌Security in ⁢Trieste

Website Editor: First, let me thank both of you for⁣ joining us today. Dr. Toscano, as a spokesperson ‌for the International Migrant Solidarity Network, what is ⁣your perspective on the ongoing migrant clearance operations in Trieste? How do⁢ these operations⁤ affect the migrant community there?

Dr.⁢ Maria Toscano: Thank you for having me. The‍ ongoing migrant clearance⁢ operations ‍in Trieste are‌ deeply concerning, as they ‌displace vulnerable people who have ⁢already experienced⁣ so much hardship and trauma. These operations often result in the forced removal ⁤of individuals ⁣from‍ their makeshift homes and the seizure ‍of their possessions. We‍ are worried about the impact on ⁢their‌ mental and physical wellbeing, especially during the colder months.

Moreover, we believe that these operations fail to address the root causes of migration, such ⁢as conflicts, persecution, and⁢ climate ⁢change. Instead of forcibly removing⁣ people from the port area, we need to work towards ⁣providing them with safe and dignified living conditions, access to education and healthcare, and legal pathways to stay in Italy or other European countries.

Website Editor: Captain Faggiano, ⁤as the⁣ head of the Carabinieri for Public Security in Trieste, what are your thoughts on the recent migrant clearance operations? How do they contribute to ensuring the⁣ safety of the local community?

Captain Alessandro Faggiano: Thank you for having me. ‌The safety of our community is our top priority, and the migrant clearance operations are a necessary measure to ‌ensure that. We ⁢have had reports of increased crime ‌and tension in the ‍area surrounding ⁤the port, which has led ⁢to these operations. Moreover, we need to respect Italian laws and regulations that prohibit unauthorized camping or occupation of public spaces.

However, we also understand the‍ humanitarian⁢ aspect of the situation. We work closely with local N
