Midwife’s call to pregnant women: ‘Get vaccinated’

Midwife Betty Franke of the District Midwifery Platform Rijnmond advises pregnant women to get a corona vaccination as soon as possible. Last weekend, four pregnant women were admitted to the intensive care unit (IC) at Erasmus MC within 24 hours. All four of them were not vaccinated against the corona virus. This is reported by RTV Rijnmond.

Pregnant women often seem unaware that they can become seriously ill from the coronavirus. According to Franke, many pregnant women are young and healthy and never belonged to a risk group. “But once you are pregnant and especially in the second half of your pregnancy, you gain weight and the pressure on your lungs increases,” says the midwife. Due to a smaller lung capacity, they are more vulnerable to corona. They are more at risk of lung complications from the virus.

Delta-variant

For more than a year there has almost always been a pregnant woman in the intensive care unit. Erasmus MC saw the number of admissions among this group stabilize before the summer, but more and more pregnant women with corona have been in hospital for a while. The Delta variant probably plays a major role in this. This one seems more dangerous for pregnant women.
