Middle East, in the Gaza Strip 4 out of 5 families do not have water, more than 2 million do not eat regularly, one million have hygiene-related diseases

MILANO – «In the Gaza Strip the population is exhausted: in addition to the destruction caused by nine months of conflict, there is a serious food and water crisis. The almost total lack of drinking water is generating an unprecedented hygiene and health emergency. People are forced to drink contaminated water. Garbage and sewage accumulate everywhere and spread diseases. Added to this is the difficulty of finding food, supplies of essential goods are halved and prices are skyrocketing. Many families go entire days without eating.”

CESVI’s work in the field. It’s not the only reminder that comes from that war scenario. This is the one of the CESVI Foundationpresent in the field with a team that has been working for months to offer support to the population. «We are continuing our distributions and at the moment we are delivering drinking water in the central areas of the Strip, the goal is to reach over 1,200 families» declared Roberto Vignola, deputy general director of CESVI.

Desalination plants. After the Hamas massacres of 7 October 2023, which resulted in the death of 1,200 Israeli citizens and with the capture of 250 hostages – 101 of whom are still prisoners – at least 50% of the wells and desalination plants were blocked or destroyed and the shortage of fuel has a catastrophic impact on water supplies: half of the still functioning wells have stopped pumping water, while two desalination plants in central and southern Gaza ceased operations on 30 June. Additionally, the Al Muntar water pipeline in Gaza City, one of three pipelines from Israel, was closed due to damage. This has reduced the availability of drinking water to an average of 2.5 liters per day per person, compared to the 15 liters indicated by the WHO as the minimum standard for survival.
