Details of how Israel’s strike on Iran was carried out have been published by the New York Times. According to two analysts, the IDF essentially hit the targets they had chosen in three phases.

In fact, for the greatest effectiveness of the strike, different types of manned and unmanned aircraft were chosen. At the same time, the Iranian forces announced that there was limited damage to the “radar systems” without going into further details.

How Israel’s strike happened

  • How many planes participated: The Israeli operation began under the cover of night early Saturday. According to the New York Times more than 100 warplanes, including fighter jets and drones, took off from Israel.
  • Where were the first strikes and why: To prevent interception by Iran’s allies, the officials said, the jets first targeted air defense and radar arrays in Syria and Iraq.
  • What were the goals: After clearing the way, the jets flew toward Iran, more than 1,000 miles away from Israel, and hit its air defense systems, the officials said. According to the two officials, a second wave of jets targeted Iran’s long-range missile production facility — the attack was specifically aimed at destroying a critical component in the production process.
  • How many sites were hit: Israel targeted about 20 sites overnight before returning to base at about 6am. local time.

Iran says the damage is limited

  • Which targets were hit according to: Iran said Israel attacked military bases in three provinces – Tehran and two near the Iraqi border, Ilam and Khuzestan. Iran’s armed forces announced tonight that only “radar systems” were damaged in overnight Israeli strikes against military targets inside Iran.
  • The insistence on air defense functionality: “Thanks to the well-timed effort of the country’s air defenses, the attacks caused limited damage and only some radar systems were damaged,” according to a statement from the general staff of the armed forces broadcast on state television.
  • “The right of defence”: Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned in his statements that Iran knows no limits when it comes to defending its interests, territorial integrity and its people. “I believe we have proven that there are no limits to our determination to defend ourselves,” the minister said, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

Hezbollah on Iran’s side

The Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah, which is backed by Tehran, described the Israeli strikes on Iran as a “dangerous escalation”, stressing that Washington bears “full responsibility” for the attack launched by Israel, its ally.

“Hezbollah strongly condemns the treacherous Zionist attack against the Islamic Republic of Iraq and considers it a dangerous escalation for the entire region,” it said in its statement. The US, he added, “bears full responsibility for the massacres, tragedies and suffering” caused by Israel.

Earlier, Lebanon’s foreign minister also condemned the Israeli strikes, calling them “a violation of Iran’s national sovereignty and a serious threat to regional security.” At the same time, he called on the UN Security Council to “put an end to Israel’s military escalation” in the region.
