Middle East: Blinken in Israel on Tuesday – Bombardment in Lebanon –

As part of his trip to the Middle East, Anthony Blinken is expected to visit Israel on Tuesday. Of course, this is an important development since it is certain that the possibility of a cease-fire in Gaza will be discussed at the table.

On the part of the USA, the desire to put an end to the bloodshed has been expressed in all tones. However, such a thing does not seem to be in Netanyahu‘s immediate intentions. Israel’s prime minister has indicated that the war will continue until the end.

New fierce attack south of Beirut

The Israeli army issued a statement following the new wave of attacks in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital, Beirut. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says its air force targeted Hezbollah weapons storage facilities and the command center of the intelligence headquarters in Dahiye.

“Prior to the attack, several measures were taken to mitigate the risk of civilian casualties,” they added, including issuing an evacuation warning in advance. Damage and losses from the impact are still being assessed, but at least one high-rise building has been completely destroyed.

They also destroyed Hezbollah tunnels

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) say they have destroyed tunnels used by Hezbollah’s elite Radwan forces, using “more than 100 tons of explosive materials.”

According to the Israeli military, its ground forces in southern Lebanon have demolished more than 50 tunnel shafts and underground infrastructure “in mosques, schools and other civilian buildings” and killed “many terrorists”. Hezbollah has yet to comment.

The hardest hits

These are the heaviest waves of airstrikes that the capital of Lebanon has received in a week, the BBC correspondent reports. These new waves of attacks are seen as a reaction to the drone that flew from Lebanon for about 70 kilometers deep into Israel towards the home of Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Although Hezbollah has not officially claimed responsibility for the drone attack, the group was considered the most likely suspect along with Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

Especially, given that in a statement last Thursday, Hezbollah announced that it is entering a “new and escalating phase” in its conflict with Israel and that in the coming days this decision will show its results.

Thus, questions are raised as to whether this is the beginning of this ‘new phase’.
