Gaza’s Civil Protection Agency said tonight that 14 people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school that has been turned into a shelter for displaced Palestinians, while the Israeli military said it was targeting Hamas “terrorists”.
“There are 14 martyrs and many injured from the massacre at the Al-Juni school in the Nuseirat refugee camp”in the central Gaza Strip, a spokesman for the agency, Mahmoud Bassal, said.
Earlier he had stated that among the victims there are “women and children”.
AFP was unable to independently verify this account.
The Israeli army, for its part, spoke of a “precision strike” aimed at “terrorists operating inside a Hamas administration center” at Al-Juni school.
The press service of the Hamas government in the Gaza Strip says the school – which is run by the UN agency for Palestine refugees – housed around 5,000 displaced people.
In recent months the army has struck several schools in Gaza, claiming they have been turned into command centers for Hamas, which the Palestinian organization denies.
