Here’s a new episode in the “Will Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard happen or not” saga. Indeed, while Microsoft tries by all possible means to reassure its competitor Sony as for the future of licensing Call of Duty on PlayStation consoles, here’s whatand the FTC has decided to file a complaint against this settlement. But why ? We will explain everything to you.
An impossible acquisition for Microsoft?
It was last February that the news had fallen: Microsoft had proposed the sum of 70 billion dollars for the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. If everything seemed to have started for the best despite Sony’s few fears, today nothing is going well. It is indeed about the date of last December 8 on which the American competition authority decided to file a complaint to purely and simply block the actionand the agency said following this rather forceful decision that if the acquisition takes place, “Xbox maker to gain control over major franchises, allowing it to hurt competition in high-performance gaming consoles and subscription services by denying or degrading rivals’ access to its popular content“.
In other words, the FTC believes that this is unfair competition from Sony, despite the various deals offered by Microsoft. Also according to her, Microsoft would really be able to remove and crush all competition.
But why such a turnaround? Well before making this decision, the FTC recalled Microsoft’s previous acquisition of Bethesda, and after assuring regulators (Microsoft) that it would keep games accessible across all platforms, we were subsequently entitled to a change of decision.
What are the consequences following this complaint?
Well following the lawsuit brought by the FTC, the consequence could be purely and simply the cancellation of the acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft. But following this news, the American manufacturer has remained calm and seems more serene than ever in the face of the situation.
It seems that the story isn’t over yet, and we could have more twists and turns in the coming weeks… We’ll see if Microsoft was right or not to be hopeful!
