Microsoft will force direct upgrade to Windows 11 21H2

A Microsoft announced this week that the upgrade from Windows 11 21H2 to its Windows 11 22H2 version will become automatic in the default system settings, both in the Home and Pro editions. The change comes just days after Windows 11 22H2 was made available as an update for the user to do whenever they wanted.

The company said in its announcement that the automatic update will be gradual – that is, not all systems will be updated immediately at once. The order to be followed will prioritize machines that have been using Windows 11 21H2 for the longest time.

“Since Windows 10 we’ve been helping users do Windows to stay current and secure with supported versions of Windows through automatic updates. We’re using this same method for Windows 11 to help you stay protected and productive.”

Users interested in speeding up the process and moving quickly to the new version of Windows 11 can check for new updates in the Windows Update app. If it is available, it will download immediately.

Intel users, beware!

Users of 11th generation Intel processors may not get the update anytime soon, however. This is because there is a known issue with Windows 11 version 22H2 and certain Intel SST drivers. Attempting to install the update on affected systems may cause error and a blue screen.

According to Microsoft, the issue is found on computers with 11th generation Intel processors and SST driver version 10.29.0.5152 or version 10.30.0.5152.

It is advisable to wait for an official solution to the problem, but users in a hurry can try to mitigate the bug by installing different versions of Intel SST drivers.
