Microsoft wants to isolate third-party drivers on Windows 10

With its upcoming Sun Valley update for Windows 10, Microsoft plans to isolate third-party drivers from the rest of the operating system, reports Windows Latest.

Drivers are programs that a computer needs to work with hardware such as printers, keyboards, and more. All approved drivers for Windows have since been saved to “DriveStore” in the System32 folder by Windows Vista. However, there is a risk that errors as well as security flaws will occur in the operating system.

In the future, third-party drivers will instead be saved outside of System32 in a new “OEMDRIVERS” folder. This allows the operating system to be isolated, also known as sandboxing, from third-party drivers so that it can run more securely and faster.

Windows will still verify the digital signature of all drivers before copying the contents to OEMDRIVERS so that nothing strange ends up there.
