Microsoft will release four of its Xbox exclusives on Sony and Nintendo consoles. Xbox boss Phil Spencer confirmed this on Thursday evening. The console maker does not say which games exactly this concerns, although there have been rumors about this before.
Spencer says on an episode of the official Xbox podcast that the four selected games have been available on Xbox consoles and Windows for more than a year. This concerns two live service games and two ‘smaller’ titles. The CEO does not say which games these are. However, sources say to The Verge that it concerns Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment, followed by Grounded and Sea of Thieves.
The Xbox director says the company will not adjust its exclusivity strategy. The CEO says he expects that exclusive games, which are only available on one console platform, will become rarer in ‘the next five to ten years’.
Rumors previously claimed that Xbox parent company Microsoft will also make larger games available on Sony and Nintendo consoles. They specifically talked about Starfield releases and Bethesda’s upcoming Indiana Jones game on the PS5. Spencer explicitly says that those two games are not among the four first games that the company is making multiplatform. Those games may follow later, but that has not been confirmed by the CEO.
“I don’t think we as an industry should ever rule out a game going to another platform,” says Spencer in an interview with The Verge, after being asked about Starfield and Indiana Jones coming to the PS5. “We are focusing on these four games and learning from the experience.” At the same time, he warns that he does not want to create false expectations that these are ‘the first four games to come over the dam and that the dam will then open for the rest’. “That’s not the plan right now.”
Spencer also emphasizes that it will continue to release new Xbox consoles in the future. The CEO confirms that new console and controller options will be released around the holidays, writes The Verge. This may involve the Series
Rumors have been going around for weeks about the arrival of some Xbox games on other platforms, which already mentioned Sea of Thieves, Pentiment and Hi-Fi Rush, in addition to Starfield and Indiana Jones. Microsoft has been expanding its Xbox brand for some time. The company has long expressed its desire to bring Xbox to more screens, although it was mainly referring to Windows PCs, in addition to smartphones via Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Xbox also hinted last year at the arrival of exclusives for the PS5 and Switch. Tim Stuart, the console manufacturer’s chief financial officer, said late last year that Xbox’s mission is to make its first-party games and subscription services “available on every screen where games can be played.” By this he meant, in addition to Windows, smartphones and smart TVs, also the PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. “It’s a bit of a change of strategy,” he said at the time.
