Microsoft in a recently published notice revealed his plan phase out VBScript from future versions of Windows. The reason for this step is the effort to increase the security of the platform and block the spread of malicious software, reports WinBuzzer magazine.
The VBScript programming language, also known as Visual Basic Script or Microsoft Visual Basic Scripting Edition, was introduced almost 30 years ago – in August 1996 – and was one of the key components of the Windows operating system.
The end of VBScript is coming
In the short term, Microsoft will make VBScript available as an on-demand feature, so users will be able to download and install it if needed. At the same time, however, they should also start planning the transition to another alternative, because later it will be permanently removed from the operating system.
“VBScript is deprecated. In future versions of Windows, VBScript will be available as an on-demand feature before it is removed from the operating system. See section for more information Resources for deprecated features,“ says Microsoft.
The decision to retire VBScript is believed to be part of a larger one plan to suppress the spread of malicious software. Restricting VBScript will remove a common infection vector used by attackers to spread malicious files such as Lokibot, Emotet, Qbot, and DarkGate malware, among others.
Efforts to protect against cyber attacks
Microsoft has taken similar steps in the past, including introducing Anti-Malware Scan Interface (AMSI) support to Office 365 applications in 2018. Other measures include disabling Excel macros, introducing XLM macro protection, and blocking Visual Basic for Applications macros by default (VBA) in MS Office.
Although this decision may seem surprising at first glance, on closer examination it appears to be logical step due to Microsoft’s efforts to protect its users from cyber attacks. Given the frequency and severity of such attacks, similar proactive measures are necessary.
At this time, it is unclear exactly when Microsoft will completely remove VBScript from future versions of Windows. However, this move already symbolizes the firm’s determination to take a tough stand against cyber threats and thus pave the way for a more secure Internet era.
