Microsoft will end support for the Cortana virtual assistant Windows app at the end of 2023. This app has been around since 2014 and was installed by default on Windows 10 and 11 systems.
Cortana is still available as part of Microsoft Teams and the Outlook app for now, writes Microsoft. For Windows, the company wants to focus on its AI applications, such as the CoPilot announced last month, which Microsoft says can be used for the same tasks as Cortana. This should also make it possible, among other things, to create calendar events and compile e-mails using voice commands. In addition, Microsoft also mentions Voice Access as a Cortana alternative, a Windows 11 feature that lets users open apps and surf the internet with their voice.
The voice assistant is not supported in the Netherlands and Belgium, but the Cortana app is still pre-installed on every Windows 10 and 11 device. However, when users try to open the app, a message pops up stating that Cortana is “not available for your region.”
In 2020, Microsoft already stopped supporting all third-party devices and software that run Cortana. The plug was also pulled from the iOS and Android apps and the version on Surface headphones a year later.
