[Reuters]–It was revealed that Microsoft is planning to install a CPU (Central Processing Unit) designed and developed in-house on the “surface” of servers and personal computers for cloud services. A person familiar with the situation revealed.
Microsoft will use semiconductor technology from British semiconductor design giant ARM, the person said. If realized, the dependence on Intel, a major US semiconductor company, may decrease.
Bloomberg reported earlier that Microsoft will develop its own CPU.
Microsoft currently relies heavily on Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) for its cloud service Azure and semiconductors for surfaces.
Meanwhile, the company is already working on a processor in collaboration with Ampere Computing, Marvell Technology Group and Qualcomm.
Last month, Apple also released a personal computer “Mac” equipped with its own CPU “M1”.
A Microsoft spokeswoman said he considers semiconductors a priority area and “will continue to invest in our capabilities in areas such as design, manufacturing and tools.” ARM declined to comment.
