Microsoft suspends sales of services and products in Russia

US software giant Microsoft has decided to suspend sales of its products and services in Russia. The company said on Friday that, like many other Western companies, it was responding to the Russian military attack on Ukraine.

“Like the rest of the world, we are horrified, angry and saddened by the footage and news coming from the war in Ukraine. We condemn this unjustified, unprovoked and illegal Russian invasion,” Microsoft President Brad Smith wrote in notification on the company’s blog.

Smith also said that in addition to suspending sales of Microsoft’s products and services, Microsoft was suspending many aspects of its business in Russia, in line with Western governments’ sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. He also noted that the company continues to help Ukraine defend against Russian cyber attacks.

Microsoft is best known for its Windows operating system and Xbox game consoles. Windows is the most widely used personal computer operating system in the world.

This week, a number of American and European companies announced a stoppage of sales in Russia, including the technology giant Apple, the motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson, the clothing chain H&M and the furniture brand IKEA.
