Microsoft supports AMD’s response to DLSS on Xbox consoles

Microsoft allows Xbox developers to use AMD’s answer to Nvidia’s DLSS in console games. FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) appeared recently on Windows PC to increase frame rate and maintain image quality. This is AMD’s answer to Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and early testing has shown it to be a promising technology that will work across multiple games and platforms.

FSR is also making its way into Xbox games. Microsoft began offering a preview of FSR support in its game development kit for Windows and Xbox today. “It’s compatible with Windows, Xbox Series X and S, and Xbox One consoles,” says Jason Ronald, director of Xbox program management at Microsoft. “FSR was designed to allow developers to achieve higher frame rates and resolutions with minimal effort for console and PC developers.”

The preview means that it will be some time before Xbox games can enjoy higher frame rates with FSR, but we hope to see it appear once Xbox games can be fully certified with FSR support. It’s probably a few months away, so realistically, we won’t see FSR appear in Xbox games until later this year or even early 2022.

Still, it’s encouraging to see that Xbox supports FSR right out of the box. We’ve reached out to AMD to clarify when this is coming to PS5, but AMD is yet to comment on this. Considering the extensive support for AMD and Nvidia GPUs on PC, we expect FSR to appear on PS5 at some point.

Sony’s PS5 currently lacks VRR or 1440p support on the PS5, and the long-awaited M.2 SSD slot It hasn’t been activated yet, so FSR support could be on Sony’s to-do list. Sony has opened a PS5 beta program So before your next major system update, we keep our fingers crossed for more information on FSR support or other features that are missing from the PS5.
