Microsoft: Sony has more exclusive games, many of them better quality – Gaming – News

Microsoft claims to the UK Markets and Competition Authority that Sony has “much better quality exclusive games”. With this statement, the Xbox manufacturer tries to justify the disputed acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

The company revealed on Wednesday CMA documents: “Both Sony and Nintendo have the exclusivity first party games that are among the best-selling titles in Europe and worldwide. This includes current exclusive content like The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, and Spider-Man. In addition to fully exclusive games, Sony also has agreements with third parties not to release games on the Xbox platform.” Additionally, Microsoft says that between 10 and 20 percent of Sony’s game sales are exclusive titles, while for Microsoft it is between 10 and 20 percent would be 0 and 10 percent.

By bargaining over the market share of Microsoft’s exclusive games, the company is trying to justify why it should be allowed to acquire Activision Blizzard, specifically targeting possible Xbox exclusivity of the Call of Duty franchise. Incidentally, Xbox CEO Phil Spencer still maintains that he he doesn’t mean to keep shooters off the PlayStation platform.

At the same time, Sony gives the opposite argument in one similar document of the CMA to: “[Call of Duty] it has been the best-selling game nearly every year for the past decade, and overwhelmingly the best-selling game in the first-person shooter genre. Other publishers don’t have the resources or experience to match this success. As a concrete example let’s take Electronic Arts, one of the major developers after Activision, which for years has been trying to create a rival to Call of Duty with the Battlefield franchise. Despite the similarities between Call of Duty and Battlefield, the Battlefield franchise can’t keep up.”

By emphasizing the importance of Call of Duty, Sony is trying to achieve the opposite of Microsoft; Activision Blizzard’s acquisition shouldn’t be done solely for a Microsoft console due to the size of the shooter franchise.

As the two companies continue to wrestle, especially over the importance of Call of Duty and exclusive games, the FTC is reportedly preparing an antitrust complaint front. The European Commission does too investigations into the acquisition operation. With this, the European government body and two leading market watchers are digging deep into the possible deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard.
