“Since the war began, Russian attacks have been successful 29 percent of the time,” said Microsoft President Brad Smith, adding that data has been stolen in at least a quarter of successful hacker attacks.
He says Russian intelligence agencies have stepped up hacking and espionage as a coalition of countries has come together to defend Ukraine. This is in addition to constant attacks on Ukraine.
Almost two-thirds of the attacks mentioned are against NATO countries. The main target, according to Microsoft, is the USA, but a good number two is Poland, where most of the weapons aid to Ukraine passes. Norway, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Turkey have also experienced increased hacking.
But a striking exception is Estonia, where Microsoft has not detected a case of hacking since the war began. The company believes this is due to Estonia’s extensive use of cloud services, which makes it easier to detect burglary.
– There are significant weaknesses in the collective security among European authorities, says Microsoft, without mentioning countries specifically.
