Having secured acquisitions of several gaming companies in the past – including Bethesda – Microsoft is reportedly thinking of reopening the coffers. According to new reports, the Xbox maker has now targeted the popular chat service Discord.
That was the website VentureBeat who first reported that Discord is talking about selling. Sources with knowledge of the situation then told Bloomberg that the company has already been in talks with Xbox CEO Phil Spencer. FAt present, there is no agreement on the table, but the price is estimated to be somewhere around 10 billion dollars – or around 86 billion kroner.
Microsoft already owns similar services, such as Skype and Team. With Discord, however, it would get over 100 million players and others who use the service actively each month.
Of course, the fact that the companies are talking together does not necessarily mean that an acquisition will take place, and according to Bloomberg, it is more likely that nothing will happen. The sources who have spoken to the website say that Discord will probably rather go public than be bought up.
While the team is trying to find the right way forward, the idea is to explore absolutely every opportunity. It includes conversations with potential buyers, and alongside Microsoft, Discord has reportedly also talked to both Epic Games and Amazon.
