Microsoft President Warns of the Dangers of Artificial Intelligence

The head of “Microsoft” warns of the dangers of artificial intelligence

Microsoft President Brad Smith said Friday that the rapid development of artificial intelligence threatens to repeat the mistakes made by the technology industry at the beginning of the era of social media.

Rapid advances in artificial intelligence are raising concerns around the world about the technology’s potential to spread misinformation, misuse and disrupt the labor market.

Brad Smith said at a business forum, Friday, that these doubts did not arise among the developers of this technology, noting that their optimism reminded him of the early years of social media platforms.

In that time, according to Smith, the tech industry has become “a little bit excited about the good things social media is going to bring to the world – and there are a lot of them – without thinking about the dangers either”.

“We have to be clear-eyed, we have to be excited about the opportunities, but we have to think deeply and even worry about the downside. We have to build the guardrails from the start,” he emphasized.

And this week, a United Nations study said that artificial intelligence is more likely to boost jobs than destroy them, with growing concern about the potential impact of the technology.

The study examined the potential impact of this platform and others on the quantity and quality of jobs, noting that most jobs and sectors are only partially susceptible to automation.

She suggested that most of them “will likely be a complement to, not a replacement for, the latest wave of generative AI such as ChatGPT.”

Smith said it was clear that people “want to be confident that this new technology will remain under human control.”

There are concerns that chatbots could flood the internet with misinformation, biased algorithms could produce racist material, etc., or AI-powered automation could destroy entire industries.
