Microsoft: Patch fixes lost connections from Windows 10

Microsoft is currently distributing optional update for Windows 10, which could be very important for some users: According to the manufacturer, the operating system has probably integrated a bug that disconnects the network connection for no apparent reason. This applies to devices that communicate with the Internet via a proxy or a virtual private network (VPN). Especially in times of home work during the corona crisis, this could particularly affect many users whose employers rely on VPNs for security reasons.

The update is available for Windows versions 1909, 1903, 1809, 1803 and 1709 – each as a package KB4554364 (for 1903 and 1909), KB4554354 (for 1809), KB4554349 (for 1803) and KB4554342 (for 1709). Older versions are no longer supported by Microsoft. In this case, the operating system should first be provided with a current content patch.

Windows update is optional

“We recommend that you only install this update if you are affected by this problem”Microsoft writes in an info text on the update. According to the description of the patch, affected Windows systems sometimes seem to simply display an incorrect connection status. For example, users may not be able to access the Internet even though an active connection is displayed, and vice versa. It is therefore advisable to first switch off the VPN connection or proxy forwarding so that a connection to the update servers is possible at all and then the update can be downloaded.

Optional patches must be selected by the users or the administrating administrators themselves and installed manually. For end customers, this is possible via the system settings of the operating system under the Windows Update tab.
