This tool is called Windows File Recovery. It is available free from the Windows Store. It works on Windows 10 2004 and later systems. It is capable of recovering files which cannot be restored from the recycle bin. Internal, external drives and USB devices are supported.
It is a command line tool. To launch it, just type Windows File Recovery in the Windows 10 search box. The basic use of Window 10 File Recovery looks like this:
winfr source-drive: destination-drive: [/options]
We are looking for a file on the source-drive: (C: for example) and the recovered file will be copied to the destination-drive: which must be a different drive from source-drive :. For example D: or F :. More precisely, the recovered file will be placed in a recovery directory created for the occasion and named according to this principle: Recovery_
For example, to recover PDF and Word files
winfr C: E: /r /n *.pdf /n *.docx
To recover files of any type, but whose name includes ‘invoice’:
winfr C: E: /r /n *facture*
To recover your entire ‘Documents’ folder:
winfr C: E: /n Users
etc.
