Microsoft Makes Concessions to European Commission to Keep Acitivision and Avoid Losses – Latest Development

The European Commission, which functions essentially as the EU’s antitrust authority, has not yet commented on Microsoft’s new offer. But this is not at all surprising, as the EC staff do not comment on the investigation during its course.

In accordance with EC policy, however, it is clear that with the documentation of this case now introduce competitors and invite them to provide feedback. After that, the final decision will be made, which should happen by May 22.

In connection with the new concessions, the vice-chairman of the board of directors of Microsoft, Brad Smith, emphasized that his company is ready to provide license agreements to competitors. This should alleviate concerns about distortion of competition.

“We stand by our promise to bring Call of Duty to more players on more devices. We have already concluded such contracts with Nintendo, Nvidia, but also Boosteroid or Ubitus, for example,” added the Microsoft spokesperson.

Reuters agency pointed out that precisely thanks to the license agreements, Microsoft has a good chance of getting the green light for the whole deal from the EC.

After the successful completion of the whole deal, Microsoft should turn into the third largest game company in the world

World number three

At the end of last year, Microsoft announced that it would buy the Activision Blizzard studio, which is responsible for the hits Call of Duty and Candy Crush, for $68.7 billion (roughly CZK 1.67 trillion). After the successful completion of the entire deal, Microsoft should turn into the third largest gaming company in the world, at least in terms of revenue. It will thus rank closely behind Tencent and Sony.

Microsoft would become the owner of a number of famous names in the gaming world – to mention at least Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo, Candy Crush, Tony Hawk, Diablo, Overwatch, Spyro, Hearthstone, Guitar Hero, Crash Bandicoot and StarCraft.

Microsoft had planned to complete the acquisition during this financial year, which ends on June 30, 2023. It is not yet clear whether that date will be moved due to the investigation.
