Microsoft said last week, Starting from Windows 10 version 1809 and above, service stack update (SSU) and cumulative update (latest cumulative update, LCU) will be merged to reduce the trouble of administrators who can’t install the update, or manage trouble.
Microsoft released Patch Tuesday last weekAlso released KB4601393, which is the February SSU for Windows 10 1809 and Windows Server 2019. According to Microsoft, this version of SSU supports a single package design that integrates Microsoft SSU and LCU. This design can simplify the deployment and installation process of Windows 10 updates.
The so-called SSU is a component that assists in the installation of Windows updates, which ensures that the computer can receive and install Windows cumulative updates smoothly. When users or administrators manually install Windows updates, they must select the correct SSU for the latest cumulative update (LCU). Before installing some LCUs, the computer must have a specific SSU. If the administrator skips not installing the SSU before, the LCU installation will fail. Unfortunately, in the past, Windows only displayed the error message “Update not applicable”, which made the administrator or user not clear what was wrong.thereforeMicrosoft announced last SeptemberSSU will be added to the LCU as a single package to reduce the trouble of the administrator, and delivered to the computer through WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) and Microsoft Catalog.
Microsoft stated that this month SSU will support a single package design that integrates Microsoft SSU and LCU. This design can simplify the deployment and installation of Windows 10 updates.Another Microsoft document stated, February SSU is a prerequisite for the computer to install the latest cumulative update (a single package of LCU combined with SSU). This single kit design can avoid the problem of not being able to install LCU due to the lack of SSU.
Microsoft also stated that when using WSUS such as Configuration Manager, the user will automatically apply the correct SSU at the same time that the user chooses the monthly cumulative update. If the enterprise enables the “Dynamic Update Package” (Dynamic Update Package) to update the Windows 10 image file, Microsoft Catalog will no longer have a separate SSU, but will provide a package that integrates SSU and LCU.
Currently, only the newer (above 1809) version of Windows 10 has a single package, but Microsoft plans to convert the old version to this integrated package in the next few months. Prior to this, Microsoft called on enterprise computers to install the February 2021 SSU.
