Solopos.com, JAKARTA – Microsoft is starting big changes in 2024, starting with adding a Copilot button to the keyboards of new laptops and PCs. Microsoft is calling it “the year of the AI PC.”

The Verge page, Thursday (4/1/2024) reported that the new Copilot button will be shipped to various new PCs and laptops from Microsoft partners, providing instant access to Microsoft’s AI-powered Windows Copilot experience, directly from the press of a keyboard button.

The Copilot key is the first major change to the Windows PC keyboard layout in nearly three decades. “Nearly 30 years ago, we introduced the Windows key on PC keyboards that enabled people around the world to interact with Windows. “We see this as another transformative moment in our journey with Windows where Copilot will be the gateway to the world of AI on the PC,” said Microsoft Executive Vice President and Head of Consumer Marketing Yusuf Mehdi.

This new Copilot button will replace the menu button (application button) that was introduced along with the Windows button decades ago.

This key will be placed next to the right-hand alt key on most keyboards, with placement varying by OEM and in different markets, in the same place that Microsoft added a dedicated Office key to its own keyboards in 2019.

The Copilot button will only be available on Windows Copilot is available starting in Windows 11. Copilot is Microsoft’s latest AI technology that offers chatbots like ChatGPT that can answer questions or even take actions within Windows.

If Windows Copilot is not yet available in some countries, the Copilot button will launch Windows Search instead. Meanwhile, the existing Windows button can open the Start menu or be combined with various other buttons for shortcuts to Windows features and functions.

There is no further information on whether Microsoft plans to allow users to use the Copilot button in combination with other buttons in the future.

Microsoft did not discuss which OEMs would add the Copilot button, and left the announcement at the world’s largest electronics show, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2024, which will be held in the United States starting January 9.

“Users will start to see the Copilot button rolling out on new Windows 11 PCs from our ecosystem partners, with availability starting later this month through the spring, including on upcoming Surface devices,” said Mehdi.

Microsoft is rumored to be launching new Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6 models in the spring, and a dedicated Copilot button on Surface devices is a rumor that has now been confirmed.
