At the first BlizzCon since Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer made a surprise appearance. Our UK editor Alex Hopley was in attendance and was able to capture the moment Spencer took the stage.
On stage, Spencer said: “Throughout Blizzard’s history, they’ve pioneered and perfected a lot across the gaming industry, and many of you today are part of that journey. Think about Diablo — It advanced the action role-playing game genre. StarCraft set the stage for the eventual development of esports, and StarCraft II was the main catalyst for the development of gaming as live entertainment.
He continued: “World of Warcraft” not only changed the way people develop and support games, but it actually introduced the concept of online communities to a wider audience. Overwatch not only reimagines gameplay, but also reimagines what a professional shooter could be.
