Microsoft Fined $20 Million by FTC for Violating Children’s Privacy Laws

The Federal Trade Commission on Monday fined Microsoft $20 million to settle lawsuits violating children’s privacy.

In a statement, the committee indicated that Microsoft illegally collected information about children and without the parents’ desire, which constitutes a violation of the US law to protect children’s privacy electronically, indicating that the company retained personal information about children registered with the Xbox game system.

The court order requires Microsoft to take action to improve the privacy policy for children on its game console system as well as for the third-party game publishers with whom it shares data of its child users.

According to the complaints filed against the company, it retained the data it collected on children during the process of registering personal accounts in the period from 2015 to 2020.

A Microsoft spokesman said the company is committed to complying with the injunction, adding that the company is currently working to address a defect it discovered in data retention systems.

The law requires that websites and services notify parents of children under 13 of the personal information to be collected, along with parental consent, prior to their use.
