Published by The Verge published internal Microsoft emails released as part of its case against the Federal Trade Commission. Among other things, the correspondence revealed that company executives discussed how Sony increased the price of the PS5 in August 2022.
The day after Sony announced the upcoming rise in price of the console, Xbox CFO Tim Stewart sent an email to Xbox head Phil Spencer. In it, Stewart wrote that Microsoft’s gaming division expected such a move from a competitor. According to him, Xbox has now begun to prepare a response plan.
In another lengthy, heavily redacted exchange, Spencer wanted the Xbox team to continue to focus on players amid price increases. Apparently, this is precisely why Microsoft raised the price of the Xbox Series X not immediately after Sony, but only a year later.
Spencer’s own correspondence has been edited, but his message can be understood from the response of Amy Silverman, who then headed Microsoft’s consumer sales and marketing department. She wrote to Spencer: “Yes, good points. Let’s focus on the players, because we still have a lot of problems.” Silverman also noted that it was a good time for Xbox to gain an audience.
During the correspondence, Spencer said that he bought a PS5 in August 2022. At the same time, the executive noted that Sony was “forcibly completing” the console with a copy of the game Horizon Forbidden West, which he mistakenly called HZD.
Sony has been forcing the PS5 to include the $50 HZD game for a while now. I bought my PS5 two weeks ago. The only available option was the HZD bundle for $549.

The Verge also suggested that this correspondence may explain why Microsoft held back from increasing the price of the Xbox Series X for almost a year. Apparently, the company really tried to offer consumers the console at the same price for as long as possible.
