Microsoft Ending Support for Windows 10 Could Lead to Massive E-Waste Generation, Says Study

Washington: Microsoft is going to end support for the Windows 10 operating system. It affects 24 crore computers worldwide. Analytical firm Canalys Research says the end of technical support for so many computers could lead to a huge pile of e-waste.

The total weight of e-waste that will be generated if Microsoft’s decision goes ahead is about 48 crore kg. According to the research, this would be equivalent to 3,20,000 cars.

Microsoft says it will end support for Windows 10 by October 2025. The company has announced that it will provide security updates to Windows 10 devices until October 2028, but will charge an annual fee. Canalys’s research says that many PCs can be used for years even if they don’t get OS support, but demand will decrease due to lack of security updates.

ESU

Microsoft is rolling out extended security updates for Windows 10 for those who need to stay on older versions. Commercial customers, enterprises, and personal customers may need to enroll in Microsoft’s new ESU program to stay on Windows 10. However, individuals who wish to join the program will have to pay an annual subscription fee.
