Microsoft DirectX 12 Ultimate and GPU planning

Announced last March, the Microsoft DirectX 12 Ultimate defines a set of DirectX 12 functionalities in order to establish a graphic standard shared between PC and console. Its four key requirements are: DirectX Raytracing (DXR) level 1.1, the Variable Rate Shading (VRS) level 2, the Mesh Shaders and the Sampler Feedback. Regarding GPU planning, it allows the dedicated graphics card to manage its video memory itself without going through intermediaries to improve performance and reduce latency. As NVIDIA said in its press release, “Hardware programming works independently of the API (DirectX, Vulkan, OpenGL)” and is therefore not limited to games. Note that it must be activated manually in the Windows 10 graphic settings (System – Display – Graphic settings) and that the option requires having Windows 10 May Update (Windows 10 2004).
