Circumstances have been discovered that Microsoft (MS) is developing a true foldable smartphone with a new form factor.
MS first introduced Surface Duo with dual displays in 2020. The Surface Duo has two 5.6-inch displays connected by a hinge, so it can be used as an 8.3-inch tablet when unfolded. The form factor is different from the Galaxy Z Fold series, which uses a single foldable display.
The patent titled “Foldable computing device spine cover plate,” which Microsoft applied to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) at the end of last month, is a new foldable device equipped with a foldable display that is different from the existing Surface Duo. shows.
A new mechanism called ‘Spine Cover’ covers and protects the hinge and the folding part of the screen. MS explains that it can prevent wrinkles, a chronic problem with existing foldable phones, and prevent dust and water from entering the device.
It also becomes more durable and reduces the possibility of damage from accidental impacts. Additionally, MS explains that if the spine cover mechanism is applied, a thinner design can be implemented.
“By moving the fine cover plate toward the central fine when the first and second display support frames rotate in opposite directions, the width of the folded computing device is reduced, making it easier and more comfortable to hold the device with one hand,” Microsoft wrote in the patent application. “We can handle it,” he explains.
MS is not introducing a follow-up product after ‘Surface Duo 2’ in 2021. Foreign media reported, “MS also announced the end of support for the Surface Duo last year, but the new patent suggests that Microsoft is preparing to revive the Surface Duo with a new approach.”
