“Microsoft Designer Review: AI-Powered Graphic Design Tool Compared to Canva”

If you don’t consider yourself at all creative when it comes to making graphic materials, Microsoft Designer could do the heavy lifting for you, from proposing anything from a poster to a post that you could share on Instagram. We tested this Canva alternative and told you about its highlights.

The tool was introduced by the company in October 2022 alongside new Surface devices and the Image Creator platform.

“Microsoft Designer helps you create from your own content or ideas, and makes it easy to quickly design social media posts, invitations, and more. It also helps to automatically obtain unique images and designs that are generated especially for you, ”explained the firm at the time.

This is possible because development is driven by Microsoft AI and DALL-E 2. Thus, the idea is to blur the lines between platform, device and cloud, the company said.

How to get started with Microsoft Designer?

For clarification, we had to wait around five days to test the platform, once we joined the waiting list by offering our email.

When the invitation arrives know the service it is clarified that it is necessary to log in with a Microsoft account, in addition to indicating that the tool is only available for Mac and PC, but “soon we will work on a mobile version”.

Microsoft Designer

Once on the official Microsoft Designer site, it is possible to start here in two ways. The first is to describe the design you’d like to create: “An Instagram post about my cosmetic product launching on April 1st,” for example.

The other is from an image that you can add from your computer or request that it be generated automatically. For the latter case, you must provide a description of the elements and its style.

For this test, we decided to provide our own photograph, one of the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Mexico City), as well as a simple description: “A poster that invites people to visit Mexico”.

Microsoft Designer delivered one or another interesting proposal, which includes animated content. Once you choose your favorite, you can customize it, from changing the colors to modifying the texts.

If it is an animation, you have the alternative of downloading it in MP4 and GIF formats, so that you can share it on a compatible social network.

Points to consider

Like all artificial intelligence, Microsoft Designer may deliver designs that you wouldn’t even joke about sharing in your spaces due to their poor quality.

Also, you should pay attention to the elements that could mix. In the case of the Palacio de Bellas Artes proposal, the application also proposed an option in which this venue was combined with elements of Bolivian culture.

What can be concluded is that Microsoft Designer is a good starting point in case you need a graphic proposal and do not have knowledge on the subject. Its various customization options can help you achieve a design that you might want to share.
