Microsoft commissions research into reparability of products – IT Pro – News

Repairability Repair depends on many things.

You have the problem of knowledge. For a large part of the population, technology is something they use, but how it works, I have no idea. I can assemble a PC and replace the defective parts if necessary. With a phone I have no idea where to start. Self repair is therefore impossible.

Have a defective TV part of 20 euros replaced for 600 euros while I buy a (at least equivalent) new TV for 1,000. Then I go for that new TV. Especially if you first have to cough up a considerable amount of research costs. (I can understand that such a repairman also wants to be reimbursed for his time if you do not know whether repair will pay off) You cannot solve the “problem” of wages.

You can’t expect a repairman to have all kinds of parts in stock while he hardly earns anything on the sale of those parts (he has to order them). Old TV away for three weeks or get new ones and watch the World Cup football. Sounds like something against repair to me.

The moment our devices break down, there are newer techniques. Have my old phone 3G repaired for 200 euros or pay 300 for that new 5G smartphone. The choice is, except for wappies, quite predictable. Give me that 5G.

The long repair times, high labor costs, and technological progress cannot be solved with better availability of old parts.
